Ballycotton Cliff Walk
Ballycotton Cliff Walk stands as East Cork’s well-kept secret, nestled near a charming fishing village perched on a rocky ledge overlooking Ballycotton Bay, enveloped by sandy beaches. This picturesque setting offers captivating vistas of Ballycotton Lighthouse, notable for being one of only two black lighthouses in Ireland, a distinction it earned when painted black in 1902 to distinguish it from Capel’s beacon.
Embark on the journey from the village, close to the lifeboat station, ensuring you’re equipped with water and sustenance, as the longest loop stretches over three hours. While in Ballycotton, relish the freshest catches served in award-winning restaurants straight from Ballycotton Harbour’s boats. Immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of traditional pubs, where live music fills the air every weekend. For those seeking activity, Ballycotton offers a cliff-side Pitch n Putt course and the internationally renowned cliff walk.
The Cliff Walk traces from Ballycotton village to Ballyandreen beach along a cliff track, bordered by meadows on one side and the vast ocean on the other. Commencing at the village’s end (opt for the right at the fork, leading uphill, as the left leads to the pier), the journey spans over five miles on a well-trodden path along the cliff edge, showcasing breathtaking panoramas and passing by Ballytrasna beach. Be prepared to navigate numerous stiles along the route, rendering it unsuitable for bikes or buggies.
