The Sea Church venue project brings St. Colman’s church alive once again for locals and visitors to the area to enjoy.
Sea Church, nestled in the heart of Ballycotton, East Cork, stands as a testament to ambition and revitalisation. Once St Colman’s Church of Ireland, this historic edifice has undergone a remarkable transformation into a dynamic events space, preserving its original charm and character.
Retaining its distinctive architectural features, such as the elegant pointed arch stained-glass windows, the enduring slate roof, and the intricate wrought-iron gates, Sea Church pays homage to its past while embracing its new role. Every aspect of the refurbishment has been meticulously executed, with a keen focus on repurposing existing fixtures and features, including the ornate oak panels.
The journey to breathe new life into this cherished landmark has been arduous yet rewarding. As a protected building, the conservation of St Colman’s was paramount, requiring a delicate balance between preservation and modernisation. Despite the challenges, the vision of Ballycotton native Pearse Flynn has come to fruition, ushering in a new era for this beloved venue.
Since its closure due to dwindling local Church of Ireland population, the church had languished, until Flynn’s acquisition in 2018. With unwavering determination and a substantial investment, Sea Church has been reborn, emerging from decline to restoration. Over a meticulous two-year restoration program, fueled by passion and dedication, this diamond in the rough has been polished to perfection, poised to once again become a beacon of community and culture in East Cork.
